Obesity Surgery

Obesity Surgery

Surgical interventions applied for the treatment of people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) higher than 40 or a BMI higher than 35 and who have some chronic diseases and therefore experience significant health problems are called 'Bariatric Surgery' or Obesity Surgery. In Memorial Obesity Surgery Centres, obesity surgeries are performed with the closed method and the patient's recovery period is shortened. With the loss of validity of procedures such as gastric band, the most commonly applied effective methods are gastric sleeve surgeries and gastric bypass..

Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy: Everything you need to know

Sleeve Gastrectomy (or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) is a bariatric procedure that removes 75-80% of the stomach. It is currently the most commonly performed bariatric procedure in the United States and worldwide..

Gastric sleeve gastrectomy brings radical changes to life!

  • Overall improved quality of life
  • Approximately 60-70% excessive weight loss within one year after surgery
  • Elimination or improvement of obesity-related health problems such as type II diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, joint pain and hyperlipidaemia
  • The desire to eat decreases
  • Decreased feeling of hunger

How sleeve gastrectomy works?

  • There is a reduction in stomach volume, which causes people to feel full much faster after the operation
  • Hormonal changes, such as reduced secretion of hunger hormones, cause people to feel less hungry
  • Increased gastric motility, which allows food to pass through the stomach and intestines faster after surgery

Stomach Balloon

Gastric balloon is a silicone balloon that is inflated to a volume of 400-700 cc with air or liquid after being placed in the stomach. It is a temporary weight loss method applied endoscopically in patients who cannot lose weight with diet and exercise, those who do not want to have surgery and patients with high risk of surgery. The gastric balloon should be removed after 6 months to 1 year after placement. It cannot be applied in the presence of gastric ulcer, large gastric hernia and pregnancy. Nausea, pain, ulcer, stomach bleeding, stomach perforation, intestinal obstruction are very rare complications.

The gastric balloon helps you to reduce the size of your portions and the frequency of eating. Thus, you will eat less but stay full longer. Your habit of snacking between meals will disappear and you will lose weight.

In studies with gastric balloon, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, gout and high cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly reduced after 6 months-1 year follow-up
